Amateur Division FAQ
What is the YOKKAO Open Amateur division?
The Amateur division is real competition with official judges, referees and results on your record — the proving ground between Technical Sparring and professional Muay Thai. Bouts are matched by experience class, weight and record, and every result counts toward the official YOKKAO Amateur Rankings. Full rules are on the Amateur rules page.
How old do you have to be to compete in the Amateur division?
Junior athletes can compete from 13 years old in the U15 bracket (13–14 years), continuing into U18 (15–17 years) — matched strictly by age and weight, with parent or guardian consent required for all minors. Adults 18+ compete in the C, B and A classes with no upper age limit. Younger athletes (from 5 years old) can gain ring experience in Technical Sparring first.
Who can register for the Amateur division?
Anyone with a coach or gym behind them, from first-time competitors (Class C) to experienced amateurs (Class A). You declare your fight record at registration, and it must match your experience class. Juniors and adults are welcome; age and weight categories are matched for safety.
What do I need to register?
A profile with your weight, date of birth, fight record and gym. If your gym is not on the site yet, choose "My gym is not listed" and type its name — you can sort the gym link later. Registration submits you to the matchmaking board.
Does registering guarantee me a fight?
No. Registration submits your profile to the matchmaking board. A bout is confirmed only once our matchmakers find a suitable opponent matching your class, weight and record, and both coaches confirm the matchup.
What are the Amateur experience classes?
- Class C (Novice, 0–3 bouts): 3 rounds × 2 min, head guard, elbow pads and shin guards mandatory, no elbows.
- Class B (Intermediate, 4–12 bouts): 3 rounds × 2 min, no head guard, elbow pads and shin guards mandatory, elbows allowed.
- Class A (Advanced, 13+ bouts): full amateur Muay Thai rules, 3 × 2 min or 5 × 2 min for title bouts.
- Juniors (U15, U18): 3 rounds × 1.5 min, head guard and shin guards mandatory, no elbows.
When an event accepts Class A & B only due to card capacity, Class C fighters are encouraged to register for Technical Sparring. Full details on the Amateur rules page.
Can I compete in both Technical Sparring and Amateur?
Yes, provided the event schedule allows it. The two systems are completely separate — Technical Sparring never alters your official amateur fight record, experience class or ranking points.
How do amateur ranking points work?
- KO/TKO win: +120 — Decision win: +100 — Win by DQ: +70 — Draw: +40 — Loss: +10 — Walkover: 0
- Bonuses: Performance of the Night +20, Underdog Victory +20, Fight of the Night +15, Finish of the Night +15, Title Defense +10
- Opponent multiplier: ×1.5 (ranks 1–5), ×1.3 (ranks 6–15), ×1.1 (ranks 16–50), ×1.0 (unranked)
Points determine seeding and qualification for YOKKAO Regional and National title bouts. Full breakdown on the points system page; live standings on the rankings page.
What happens to my points when I move up a class?
When you are promoted to a higher experience class, your class points reset to zero. Your lifetime record and earned badges stay on your profile.
My gym isn't on the site yet — can I still register?
Yes. During registration (or on your profile page), select "My gym is not listed" and type your gym's name — your registration and spot are secured. Your coach or gym owner adds the gym on the gyms page by clicking "Add your gym". Once the gym is approved, our staff will link your profile to your gym — no need to re-register. The gym owner can then approve you directly from their roster, moving you straight into matchmaking.
Are coach / corner passes included with athlete registration?
For registered gyms, coach passes are complimentary based on team size: 1–3 registered athletes = 2 free coach passes; 4–6 = 3; 7–10 = 4; 11–15 = 5. Athletes never pay a coach pass — gyms needing extra coaches purchase each additional pass ($25). Independent athletes (no registered gym) must be accompanied by an adult cornerman who purchases a corner pass ($25).
My coach just registered our gym today, but I can't select it. What should I do?
Newly submitted gyms undergo a quick administrative review before appearing in the gym directory. In the meantime choose "My gym is not listed" and type the gym's name — once approved, our staff will link your profile to your gym.
Who can change my fight record or experience class?
You can enter and edit your declared record (wins, losses, draws) on your profile page before your profile is approved. Once approved, the record and class are locked to protect fair matchmaking. Your coach can update them from the Gym Portal roster, and YOKKAO staff can update them — reach us via the contact page with the updated record or coach confirmation.
What gear is provided for amateur fights?
Full YOKKAO gear is provided, including official YOKKAO fight shorts, boxing gloves, shin guards and protective equipment. Fighters bring their own mouthguard and groin protector.
I bought a registration bundle with YOKKAO shorts or a tee — how do I get my gear?
All gear bundles are picked up in person at the event check-in desk on fight day — nothing is shipped. Sizes are selected on-site by our staff based on your weigh-in weight and fit preference. You receive a separate Gear QR code by email (also under My Tickets) — present it to staff at check-in.
When are amateur weigh-ins?
Amateur weigh-ins take place the day before the event. The exact hours and location are published on each event page.
What happens if I miss weight?
Missing weight can forfeit the bout or turn it into an exhibition at the commission's and opponent's discretion. Contact your coach and the event staff as early as possible.
I entered the wrong weight, birthdate or gym on my profile — how do I correct it?
Log in and go to your profile page — you can update weight, height, social links and gym details at any time before matchmaking is finalized. If a field is locked, submit a request via the contact page.
Are registrations or tickets refundable?
No. All registrations, gear bundles, spectator tickets, VIP tables and coach passes are final sales — refunds are not available. Full details are on the refund policy page.
Progression is based on completed amateur bouts. See also the Points System and Rankings.
